Pregnancy loss is common, unacknowledged, and connected to shame.

  • 1 in 3 people who experience pregnancy will have an abortion at some point in their lives

  • Between 15% - 20% of all pregnant people experience miscarriage

  • Full term losses affect about 1% of pregnancies

In addition, growing research confirms that infant mortality rates for Black families in the U.S. are 3-4x higher than the rates for white families due to higher rates of preterm labor due to bias, racism, and severe inequities in health care.

Despite these staggering statistics, we rarely acknowledge the personal and collective impacts these events can have. Sometimes they happen in the early stages of pregnancy before a person has let friends, family, or co-workers know they are pregnant. When they are more visible, these losses can be shrouded in shame and unacknowledged as significant experiences for our bodies and within our families and communities. Because these losses are hard to talk about, many people lack the support they need to grieve and seek healing.

BEREAVEMENT AND LOSS DOULA SUPPORT

“I can say with certainty that my work with Rooted Birth changed my life. After losing our baby at 17 weeks and enduring so much medical trauma, we were left high and dry by our doctors and hospital. Davinah gave us language for our loss that no one had used, she held space that no one had opened, and she heard us in a way no one else ever did - these things allowed us to begin our healing. She has wisdom beyond this world to bestow and I cannot recommend her services enough. We also worked with her after an earlier loss and again I was floored by how incredible she is at this work and how helpful it was to me and my wife.” Risa, Portland, OR

Loss

Whether your loss is unexpected or you are preparing to say goodbye to your unborn or newborn, I am with you. You will receive emotional, physical, and logistical care from me every step of the way. Postpartum care is also emphasized to bring forth the beginnings of healing with intentional, restorative care. This is not a journey to be traveled alone, and I am honored to walk alongside you.

Support is focused to initial emotional processing, nourishment guidance, physical healing and preparation for what the postpartum body will feel like from 0-6 weeks.

Pelvic Autonomy

Pelvic autonomy can be approached as a sacred act. I provide phone or in-person care before, during, and/or after any procedures. Our time is spent discussing options, standard procedures, and deciding what is best for you. We also spend time de-mystifying the concerns or fears you may have to ensure that you feel confident and prepared. Postpartum care is emphasized following your procedure to initiate and ensure full depth of care for your pelvis and reproductive organs as they recover.

Support is focused to initial emotional processing, connection to community resources, nourishment guidance, physical healing and preparation for what the postpartum body will feel like from 0-6 weeks.
